Cine y Comunidad: El Corazón del Proyecto
Hacer comunidad no es fácil. Muchas veces nos quejamos de todo lo que falta en nuestras colonias y se nos olvida que también podemos organizarnos para hacer las cosas. Ya soy parte del comité en el área de salud, pero se me ocurrió que sería bueno hacer algo cultural, sobre todo para los jóvenes. Aunque no me sobra el tiempo, siento que es nuestra responsabilidad cuidar y activar nuestros espacios en lugar de solo criticar. Además, si estuviera en mi pueblo, seguramente ya me hubieran agarrado para ser topil (dar servicio comunitario) lol, así que esta es mi manera de dar mi servicio aquí. Logré convencer a la presidenta para empezar a organizar estas funciones, al grado de que en tono de broma me he autonombrado el "Presidente de Salud y Cultura".
Building community isn't easy. We often complain about everything our neighborhoods lack and forget that we can also organize ourselves to make things happen. I'm already part of the health committee, but I thought it would be great to do something cultural, especially for the youth. Even though I don't have much spare time, I feel it's our responsibility to take care of and activate our spaces instead of just criticizing. Besides, if I were back in my hometown, I probably would have been drafted to be a topil (traditional community servant) by now lol, so this is my way of doing community service here. I managed to convince our president to start organizing these screenings, to the point where, jokingly, I've crowned myself the "President of Health and Culture."
Este esfuerzo, impulsado a través de los proyectos sociales @cineyekuk y @cine.poo, tiene un objetivo claro: generar un impacto social real. Y es por eso que este domingo 26 de abril a las 6:30 pm, tendremos una función especial y totalmente gratuita de la película El diablo fuma.
This effort, driven by the social projects @cineyekuk and @cine.poo, has a clear goal: generating real social impact. And that's why this Sunday, April 26th at 6:30 pm, we will host a special, completely free screening of the film El diablo fuma.
Un Llamado a la Acción
Sabemos que esta gran película está por llegar a cines comerciales, pero gracias a los esfuerzos de distribución comunitaria, la proyectaremos en nuestro cineclub local primero. Este post es también un llamado para que las distribuidoras y cineastas nos escuchen: queremos llevar cine independiente, humano y de calidad a donde se pueda. (Un agradecimiento gigante a Mandarina Cine por su apoyo constante y por prestarnos joyas como Los hijos de la costa, la cual apenas vamos a poner pronto en mayo).
We know this great film is about to hit commercial theaters, but thanks to community distribution efforts, we're screening it at our local cineclub first. This post is also a call to action for distributors and filmmakers to hear us: we want to bring independent, human, and high-quality cinema wherever we can. (A huge thanks to Mandarina Cine for their constant support and for lending us gems like Los hijos de la costa, which we'll be screening soon in May).

- Lugar: Oficinas de la colonia Samaritana, Santa María Atzompa. (Ojo: Si llueve, la función se mueve a mi casa, ¡no se cancela!).
- Idioma: Español con subtítulos en inglés. (Por si algún extranjero se anima a caerle hasta Atzompa, lol).
- Date & Time: Sunday, April 26th at 6:30 pm.
- Location: Samaritana neighborhood offices, Santa María Atzompa. (Note: If it rains, we'll move the screening to my house, it won't be canceled!).
- Language: Spanish with English subtitles. (Just in case any foreigner wants to make the trek to Atzompa, lol).

La película de Ernesto Martínez Bucio no intenta explicarte qué pasó; intenta que lo sientas. La casa es un refugio-cárcel con ventanas tapadas. Es el miedo al abandono convertido en fantasía, donde se mezcla la religión, la tele y la figura de Juan Pablo II como ruido generacional.
Ernesto Martínez Bucio's film doesn't try to explain what happened; it tries to make you feel it. The house is a prison-refuge with covered windows. It's the fear of abandonment turned into fantasy, where religion, television, and the figure of John Paul II blend together as generational background noise.
Es, en el fondo, una historia de amor entre hermanos que se cuidan cuando todo se rompe. ¿Qué te hace sentir a ti ese misterio?
It is, deep down, a love story between siblings taking care of each other when everything falls apart. What does this mystery make you feel?
