Oaxaca de Juárez is not just a city; it’s a living organism that breathes art on every corner. This April, our capital dresses up to commemorate its 494th anniversary, and the Spring Festival 2026 (Festival Primavera) is an open invitation for locals and visitors to reclaim the plazas, temples, and gardens that give us our identity.
Presented by Mayor Raymundo Chagoya and state cultural authorities, this festival is not just a schedule of events; it's a reminder of why Oaxaca is the cultural heart of Mexico. With over 40 free activities, the agenda is designed so that culture is truly for everyone.
The Kickoff: Kilometers of History
The festival kicks off on Sunday, April 19, with the adrenaline of the Commemorative Race. It’s not just about sports; it’s about running through the Historic Center as the spring sun barely wakes up.
- 5K Route (08:00 hrs): A quick circuit along Av. Independencia and Parque Galeana.
- 10K Route (08:10 hrs): A greater challenge embracing Calzada Héroes de Chapultepec and La República.

A Week of Cultural Immersion
If you love to get carried away by the sound of the marimba or the power of dance, these are the key points you cannot ignore:
The Zócalo: The Heart of the Celebration
The main square will be the acoustic epicenter. From the Opening with the State Music Band (Sunday 19, 12:00 hrs) to the classic Danzón Wednesdays (18:30 hrs). If you're looking for something more intimate, the State Marimba will serenade us on Monday the 20th at 18:30 hrs.
El Pañuelito: The Corner of Expression
This garden will become the stage for avant-garde and folklore. Highlights include the Folkloric Group Guendabichii (Thursday 23) and the powerful voice of Geo Meneses singing "Oaxaca de Mis Amores" on Friday 24 at 20:00 hrs. To close the festival, rock takes over the space on Sunday 26 with a band marathon starting at 16:00 hrs.
April 25: The Awakening of the City
Saturday is the peak day. The city will awaken with the Chirimía Call (06:45 hrs) and the ringing of bells from all the temples. It’s a unique sensory experience: the sound of bronze calling for the celebration.
Don't forget to arrive early at the Alameda de León for the Mañanitas (07:00 hrs) and, of course, the traditional feast of tamales and atole for all attendees at 08:15 hrs. It’s the essence of our hospitality served in a corn husk.
Beyond the Cantera: The Coast Awaits
At Qué Onda Oaxaca, we know that the traveling spirit never stops. If the festival left you wanting more, remember that the Oaxacan Coast is at its peak. Crystal clear waters, vibrant reefs, and the chance to spot whales on the horizon are the perfect "after-party" for this anniversary.
Oaxaca is ready. And you, what's up? Which event will we see you at?
